North Catholic Students Visit AGH for the Open Heart Surgery Program
Several Anatomy and Physiology students from Mrs. Benzing and Mrs. Murray’s classes had the chance to visit Allegheny General Hospital Open Heart Surgery Program. Students watched an open heart surgery of a coronary artery bypass with a patient being a part of a random trial testing where all of the bypasses are arteries instead of veins. This real-world application of their anatomy studies gave students a meaningful understanding of the human body, while also exposing them to a variety of potential professions within the field of medicine. It’s really valuable because students not only see surgeons in action, but nurses, surgery techs, physician assistants, and anesthesiologists.
